Hi! My name is Steph and I'm a girl on a mindset-moving mission! :P
I recently graduated with a BA in Psychology from Duke University, and wrote an honors thesis that explores how conflicting expectations in Chinese culture regarding eating and body shape ideals may contribute to the onset of disordered eating thoughts and behaviors. In the fall semester of this year, I will be pursuing a clinical psychology masters degree at Columbia University in New York City!
Having struggled with an eating disorder in Hong Kong and having personally experienced how cultural stigma towards mental illness can contribute to the development and maintenance of symptoms, I have made it my life mission to change the way that eating disorders are perceived and treated in Chinese communities, through research and awareness-raising efforts.
I am the founder of Body Banter (bodybanter.com), which is an initiative that aims to empower young people to redefine body image standards through engaging in discussions, critically evaluating research and creating advocacy projects to raise awareness about body image issues amongst their communities. Through involving students globally in the initiative, Body Banter aims to highlight the incredible diversity that exists in the ways that we perceive and relate to our bodies.
In my free time, I like to listen to scary podcasts, throw heavy things around, and giggle with friends and family :)
This blog will document my academic adventures, my personal recovery journey and my advocacy/research work.
Hope you stick around! :)
