Hi! My name is Steph and I'm a girl on a mindset-moving mission!!!
I am currently a senior majoring in Psychology at Duke University, and am writing an honors thesis that explores how conflicting expectations in Chinese culture regarding eating and body shape ideals may contribute to the onset of disordered eating thoughts and behaviors.
Having struggled with an eating disorder in Hong Kong and having personally experienced how cultural stigma towards mental illness can contribute to the development and maintenance of symptoms, I have made it my life mission to change the way that eating disorders are perceived and treated in Chinese communities, through research and awareness-raising efforts.
I am the founder of Body Banter (bodybanter.com), which is an initiative that aims to empower young people to actively advocate for body positivity in their own lives and amongst others in their communities through online projects (such as podcasts, column posts, photo campaigns and artwork) and in-person discussion groups. Body Banter aims to encourage exposure to diverse perspectives regarding body image - to help people realize that body image issues can manifest in every person in a plethora of different ways.
In my free time, I like to listen to scary podcasts, throw heavy things around, and giggle with friends and family :)
This blog is a documentation of my personal and academic adventures - that means reflections about my own recovery journey as well as updates on my advocacy/research work.
Hope you stick around! :)
